Onlangs is het 17e deel van de Acta Conventus Neo-Latini verschenen: Acta Conventus Neo-Latini Albasitensis: Proceedings of the Seventeenth International Congress of Neo-Latin Studies (Albacete 2018), red. Florian Schaffenrath en María Teresa Santamaría Hernández (Leiden: Brill, 2020).

Every third year, the members of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (IANLS) assemble for a week-long conference. Over the years, this event has evolved into the largest single conference in the field of Neo-Latin studies. The papers presented at these conferences offer, then, a general overview of the current status of Neo-Latin research; its current trends, popular topics, and methodologies. In 2018, the members of IANLS gathered for a conference in Albacete (Spain) on the theme of “Humanity and Nature: Arts and Sciences in Neo-Latin Literature”. This volume presents the conference’s papers which were submitted after the event and which have undergone a peer-review process. The papers deal with a broad range of fields, including literature, history, philology, and religious studies.

Onlangs is het volgende boek over het leven, werk en de poëzie van de Luxemburger Nicolaus Mameranus (1500-1567) verschenen: Matthew Tibble, Nicolaus Mameranus: Poetry and Politics at the Court of Mary Tudor. With Appendices by Matthew Tibble and Gary Vos (Leiden: Brill, 2020). Het werk richt zich met name op Mameranus’ periode aan het Britse hof (i.t.t. zijn jaren in de Nederlanden en Spanje) en is de eerste moderne monografie die aan deze dichter gewijd is. De appendices bevatten onder andere een Latijnse tekst, vertaling en beknopte verantwoording van de tekstconstitutie van een aanzienlijk deel van zijn oeuvre. Inmiddels is in eigen beheer verschenen het magnum opus (naast zijn uiterst gedegen Schonaeus-studies) van Hans van de Venne, zijn uitgave van het Vriendenboek van Daniel van Vlierden (geb. 1572). Het kon worden gepubliceerd met financiële steun van het Hendrik Muller Vaderlands Fonds en de Vrienden van het Noord-Hollands Archief. Er zijn vijftig exemplaren van deze uitgave gemaakt, waarvan sommige door de KB naar instellingen in binnen- en buitenland worden verzonden als aanvulling op hun alba amicorum-verzameling, andere bestemd zijn voor degenen die Hans van de Venne hebben geholpen, en enkele exemplaren in vrije verkoop beschikbaar zijn. Wie een exemplaar zou willen aanschaffen (kosten: € 50), kan contact opnemen met Ad Leerintveld (ad.leerintveld@gmail.com), die dan kan meedelen of er nog een exemplaar beschikbaar is en hoe u dat kunt verwerven.

Onlangs is een tekstuitgave van Nicolaus Vernulaeus’ (Nicols de Vernulz) Henricus Octavus seu Schisma Anglicanum Tragoedia door Thomas M. Bervoets (Tilburg, 2020) verschenen. Het is hier (gratis) te downloaden: https://www.stilus.nl/vernulaeus/index.htm.

Onlangs zijn de delen 18 en 19 van De correspondentie van Desiderius Erasmus, vertaald door respectievelijk Tineke ter Meer en István Bejczy, verschenen. Omdat deel 20 al eerder verschenen was, is hiermee de reeks voltooid! De Nederlandse vertaling was een initiatief van Theo Steens, die na het vertalen van de eerste vijf delen de Rotterdamse uitgever Willem Donker bereid vond de reeks uit te geven. Dankzij deze vliegende start en de inzet van Donker, een vast team van vertalers, redactieraad en corrector, en een stichting die voor de benodigde financiering heeft gezorgd, is dit mammoetproject na 16 jaar voltooid.

In oktober zal nog een registerdeel verschijnen dat tijdens een publieksbijeenkomst in Rotterdam zal worden gepresenteerd.

The Latin text is based on Spinoza’s Opera posthuma of 1677, which has been collated systematically with the 1677 Dutch version in De nagelate schriften and with the Vatican manuscript (copied from Spinoza’s completed autograph between November 1674 and May 1675, but only discovered in 2010). It is accompanied by a scrupulous new translation. The introduction examines the textual history of the work from its genesis to recent editions and translations, and presents an account of the constitution of the Latin text and of the principles governing the French translation. Historical, lexical and conceptual clarifications are offered in the notes. Three appendices deal with the geometric examples, the excursion on the nature of bodies, and the structure of the theory of the affects. The book is completed by a glossary, a bibliography and an index of names.

Tom Deneire en Bertin Deneire, Nights in Flanders. Joseph Alfred Bradney, Latin Poet of the Great War (s.l.: Lulu Press, 2019).

It is a little-known fact that during the Great War of 1914-1918 a handful of people wrote war poetry in Latin. Not from the safety of their book-laden desks, but very much with their boots in the mud. The most prolific of these Latin war poets was Colonel Sir Joseph Alfred Bradney (1859-1923), who in 1919 even published a booklet Noctes Flandricae or Nights in Flanders with war poetry written in Belgium and France. This book tells the story of both his Latin poetry and his involvement in the Great War.

Op 13 november is verschenen Theo Janssen, Printed Editions of Lorenzo Valla’s ​Elegantiae: Additions to the 1969/1971 census by Jozef IJsewijn and Gilbert Tournoy (Amsterdam: Stichting Neerlandistiek VU/Münster: Nodus Publikationen, 2019). Een bijzonder gedegen onderzoek naar de 234 drukken van Valla’s befaamde en invloedrijke boek over de goede stijl in het Latijn van 1471 tot 1688 en hun digitale beschikbaarheid. Janssen vond 80 drukken die nog niet in IJsewijns and Tournoys lijst waren opgenomen; dit was mogelijk door de vele internetbronnen die wij nu kunnen gebruiken en waarover IJsewijn en Tournoy destijds natuurlijk nog niet konden beschikken. Janssen traceerde ook relaties tussen verschillende drukken op basis van de eerste regels. Dit boek laat de verspreiding van Valla’s werk over Europa en door de tijd heen zien.

Humanistica Lovaniensia. Journal of Neo-Latin Studies (online ISSN 2593-3019, doi.org/10.30986/hl, DOAJ, PKP, ERIH PLUS) is a KU Leuven based double-blind peer-reviewed international journal that appears twice a year (March and September) as an online-only open access publication. HL welcomes articles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish on Neo-Latin language, literature and culture from the fourteenth to the twenty-first century, as well as critical editions and translations of Neo-Latin texts.
