Klaas Potjewijd, Ons zot gedrag in stappen. Toelichting op ‘Lof der Zotheid’ van Erasmus (Rotterdam: Mijnmanagementboek, 2022).

Erasmus’ Lof der Zotheid blijft, na vierhonderd jaar, nog intrigeren, en er blijven nog vragen over. Klaas Potjewijd wijdde er al diverse publicaties aan: Zó ontstond de Lof der Zotheid van Erasmus van Rotterdam. Een wordingsgeschiedenis (2009); Erasmus and his Praise of Folly (2017) en nu Ons zot gedrag in stappen. Potjewijd gaat uit van een ontstaan van het werk in fasen. In Ons zot gedrag in stappen wordt dat heel schematisch weergegeven op pp. 15 en 16, waar twee maal de drie fasen worden aangegeven, eerst als structuurplan, dan als stappenplan. Potjewijds argumenten voor deze indeling in fasen staan verspreid over het boek (pp. 37-40, 59, 81-82), en maken een dergelijk gefaseerd schrijfproces aannemelijk. Het grote lettertype van deze uitgave is bedoeld om de tekst goed toegankelijk te maken, wat is gelukt.

Onlangs is in Open Access van de hand van Raf van Rooy New Ancient Greek in a Neo-Latin World: The Restoration of Classical Bilingualism in the Early Modern Low Countries and Beyond (Leiden: Brill, 2023) verschenen: https://brill.com/display/title/65004.

Did you know that many reputed Neo-Latin authors like Erasmus of Rotterdam also wrote in forms of Ancient Greek? Erasmus used this New Ancient Greek language to celebrate a royal return from Spain to Brussels, to honor deceded friends like Johann Froben, to pray while on a pilgrimage, and to promote a new Aristotle edition. But classical bilingualism was not the prerogative of a happy few Renaissance luminaries: less well-known humanists, too, activated their classical bilingual competence to impress patrons; nuance their ideas and feelings; manage information by encoding gossip and private matters in Greek; and adorn books and art with poems in the two languagges, and so on. As reader, you discover promising research perspectives to bridge the gap between the long-standing discipline of Neo-Latin studies and the young field of New Ancient Greek studies.

Onlangs is een metrische vertaling van een paasdrama van Hugo de Groot door Arthur Eijffinger verschenen: Een lijdensdrama door Hugo de Groot. De Belijdenis van een Paaskind (Amsterdam: Boom Juridisch, 2023).

Hugo de Groot werd geboren op 10 april 1583, eerste Paasdag.  Arthur Eyffinger, die diens Christus patiens (Het lijden van Christus) inleidde, uitgaf en vertaalde,  maakt hier zelfs in de titel een toespeling op. In zijn inleiding behandelt hij respectievelijk de Groots geloof (‘Een diepgelovend [=diepgelovig, JB] Paaskind’), De Groots erfenis, de literaire theorie, De Groots opvatting van het dichterschap, het Twaalfjarig Bestand en de implicaties voor Hugo de Groot zelf, de latere jaren, de Christus patiens zelf. Eyffinger heeft een uitstekende tekst bezorgd, en een prachtige Nederlandse vertaling.

Hugo de Groot (1583-1645) schreef in zijn leven drie (Neo-) Latijnse drama’s op bijbels thema. Het eerste handelde over de Zondeval (Adamus Exul, 1601); het tweede betrof een Lijdensdrama (Christus Patiens, 1608); het derde beschreef de rol van Jozef in Egypte (Sophompaneas, 1635). In navolging van zijn voorbeeld, de Romeinse moraalfilosoof en dramaturg Seneca (c. 3 v. Chr. – 65 n. Chr.) stelde De Groot in zijn drama’s ethische en actuele sociaal-politieke vraagstukken aan de orde. In het scheppings-drama sprak hij zich uit over zaken van Predestinatie. In het Jozef-drama tekende hij de ideale regent. Het hier uitgegeven drama schreef De Groot in de dagen van zijn bemoeienis met de onderhandelingen die leidden tot het Twaalfjarig Bestand (1609-1621).

In deze uitgave worden de Latijnse tekst en de Nederlandse vertaling naast elkaar en in hetzelfde volume en metrum gepresenteerd.

Hugo Grotius, Annals of the War in the Low Countries

The Annals of the War in the Low Countries is one of Hugo Grotius’ lesser-known works. Grotius expresses a contrarian view of the early revolt, which he presents not as a united battle for the true faith and the ancient liberties of the land but as a protracted and painful struggle, not only with the great power of Spain, but also with discord, selfishness and religious fanaticism among the Dutch. To convey this complex and controversial vision of the foundational years of the Dutch Republic, Grotius chose the worldview and the prose style of the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus as his model. His commissioners, however – the States of Holland – did not publish the work when it was finished in 1612; it appeared in print posthumously in 1657.

This is the first edition of Grotius’ then-influential and well-known Annals of the Dutch Revolt since its initial publication. It presents a critical edition of the Latin text, a fresh modern English translation, and an introduction which covers all aspects of the work, from its conception to its modern reception, underlining the importance of reason of state for Grotius’ thought in general.

Onlangs is verschenen Francesco Filelfo, Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, ed. door Jeroen De Keyser en Louis Verreth. Critical edition Hellenica no. 103. Alessandria: Edizioni dell’Orso, 2022.

Francesco Filelfo’s Latin rendering of the (pseudo-)Aristotelian Rhetorica ad Alexandrum was the first translation of any ancient Greek rhetorical treatise in the Quattrocento. It turned out to be the most successful and enduring of all of Filelfo’s writings. Surviving in 32 manuscript witnesses, his translation would remain the standard Latin version for many centuries to come. No other work of Filelfo’s has been in print for such a long time, from the editio princeps in 1483/84 to five other incunabulum editions and some forty sixteenth-century reprints, until its inclusion in the famous Aristotle edition by Immanuel Bekker.

This edition of Filelfo’s Rhetorica ad Alexandrum is the first one to be based on a comprehensive study of the text’s transmission. It also offers, on facing pages, the Greek source text as Filelfo found it in his copy of the Greek treatise, allowing readers to grasp at a glance both Filelfo’s rendering and its model, and to examine the humanist’s translation practices and preferences throughout. Furthermore, it contains a bi-directional glossarium of all rhetorical terms and concepts that are used in the treatise.

Onlangs werd aan Vibeke Roggen, docent Latijn aan de Universiteit van Oslo, een omvangrijk, veeltalig boek aangeboden, Studia in Honorem Vibeke Roggen. Hierin staan ook artikelen over Neolatijn, waaronder een van de hand van Pieta van Beek over een onbekend lofschrift waarin de drie nieuwe Anna-Gratiën geprezen worden: Anna Maria van Schurman, Anna Memorata en Sophia-Anna Corbiniana, en een artikel door Christian Laes over Karl-Heinrich Ulrichs poging om het Latijn te redden als het middel voor internationale communicatie in diens Somnium Transalpinum.

Justus Lipsius, Monita et exempla politica / Political Admonitions and Examples

In 17th-century intellectual life, the ideas of the Renaissance humanist Justus Lipsius (1547–1606) were omnipresent. The publication of his Politica in 1589 had made Lipsius’ name as an original and controversial political thinker. The sequel, the Monita et exempla politica (Political admonitions and examples), published in 1605, was meant as an illustration of Lipsius political thought as expounded in the Politica. Its aim was to offer concrete models of behavior for rulers against the background of Habsburg politics.

Lipsius’ later political treatise also forms an indispensable key to interpret the place and function of the Politica in Lipsius’ political discourse and in early modern political thought. The Political admonitions and examples – widely read, edited, and translated in the 17th and 18th centuries – show Lipsius’ pivotal role in the genesis of modern political philosophy.

De In Aphtonii Progymnasmata Scholia is geen handboek om rhetorica te onderwijzen, maar is bedoeld om onderdeel te zijn van een compleet curriculum dat begint met grammatica, gevolgd door syntaxis en dat eindigt met de Scholia, die de eerste stap vormen in de bovenbouwstudies. Anders dan andere handboeken, zoals dat van Lorich, zijn de Scholia van Mal Lara niet bedoeld voor de leraren, maar voor de leerlingen, en wil het de leerlingen zowel in het Latijn, als in de volkstaal scholen. Het doel ervan is dus de jeugd een gids te verschaffen om zowel Latijn als Spaans goed te leren spreken en schrijven, en een verdieping te bieden van de studie die is begonnen met de beginselen van de grammatica.
