Humanistica Lovaniensia. Journal of Neo-Latin Studies (online ISSN 2593-3019) is a KU Leuven based double-blind peer-reviewed international journal that appears twice a year (March and September) as an online-only open access publication.

HL welcomes articles in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish on Neo-Latin language, literature and culture from the fourteenth to the twenty-first century, as well as critical editions and translations of Neo-Latin texts.

Aankondiging IANLS-congres 2021

In augustus 1971 werd op initiatief van wijlen Professor Jozef IJsewijn in Leuven het allereerste internationale Neo-Latijnse congres georganiseerd. Er werd toen een International Association for Neo-Latin Studies opgericht, en na de tweede IANLS-conferentie in Amsterdam (1973) volgden driejaarlijkse congressen in Tours (1976), Bologna (1979), St Andrews (1982), Wolfenbüttel (1985), Toronto (1988), Kopenhagen (1991), Bari (1994), Ávila (1997), Cambridge (2000), Bonn (2003), Boedapest (2006), Uppsala (2009), Münster (2012), Wenen (2015) en Albacete (2018).
Begin augustus werd tijdens die laatste bijeenkomst ook de locatie van het volgende congres vastgelegd. We zijn verheugd u te kunnen melden dat precies 50 jaar na het eerste, nu ook het 18de Congress of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies zal worden georganiseerd door het Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae, van 1 tot 6 augustus 2021. We verwachten dan ruim 300 Neo-Latinisten uit de hele wereld.

Het organiserend comité bestaat momenteel uit Jan Papy (voorzitter), Jeroen De Keyser (coördinator), Marijke Crab (congresmanager), Fabio Della Schiava en Ide François.

Neo-Latin Scholarship on the Slavs

An international conference organised by

the Ján Stanislav Institute of Slavistics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences

to be held in Bratislava on 5–7 December 2018

Call for Papers

Almost all branches of modern science and scholarship, including humanities, can trace their existence back to at least early modern times when Latin was a common medium of European erudition. Yet, present-day researchers in individual disciplines are largely unaware of the existence of early modern Latin scholarship related to their respective fields of study.

This conference aims to explore the rich corpus of Neo-Latin scholarly texts written about the Slavs, thereby intending to throw light on the early stages of what later became established as Slavistics or Slavonic Studies. We also hope to bring closer together researchers from the fields of Slavistics and Neo-Latin Studies, a combination which we believe carries great potential for future research in both disciplines.

We welcome papers of twenty to thirty minutes in English, German or Latin concerning early modern Latin scholarship on the history, philology, mythology, ethnography, geography, etc., of the Slavs. Publication of a collection of essays based on the conference proceedings is envisaged in 2020. Please send your proposal of ca. 250 words and a very short biographical note to Dr Svorad Zavarský (svorad.zavarsky@savba.sk) no later than 15 December 2017. All authors will be notified by the end of 2017.

“Humanity and Nature:

Arts and Sciences in Neo-Latin Literature”

Papers on this theme (in Latin, English, French, German, Italian or Spanish) or on other aspects of Neo-Latin Studies are welcome. We especially welcome abstracts on methodological and pedagogical aspects of Neo-Latin, as well as proposals for posters on relevant projects and research clusters, and for special sessions. Special sessions may be proposed.

Abstracts (150-200 words) should be submitted to María-Teresa Santamaría-Hernández, Chair of Organizing Committee, by e-mail: congreso.ianls.albacete@uclm.es, no later than 30 April 2017.

Participants must be paid-up members of the IANLS before 30 April 2017.

The Congress registration (120 euros and 60 euros reduced fee) may be done from October 2017.

29 november-2 december: internationale conferentie ‘Authority Revisited. Towards Thomas More and Erasmus in 1516’, KU Leuven

Van 29 november tot 2 december 2016 vindt de internationale conferentie ‘Authority Revisited. Towards Thomas More and Erasmus in 1516’ aan de KU Leuven plaats. Onderwerp van de conferentie zijn de receptie en invloed op het moderne Westerse denken van More’s Utopia en Erasmus’ Novum Instrumentum, die beide in Leuven het licht zagen, en van de bronnen en voorbeelden waar zij gebruik van maakten.

Tot de uitgenodigde sprekers behoren Gillian Clark (University of Bristol), Henk Jan de Jonge (Universiteit Leiden), Günter Frank (Europäische Melanchthon Akademie), Brad Gregory (University of Notre Dame) en Quentin Skinner (Queen Mary University of London).

‘Reassembling the Republic of Letters’: we bouwen door aan de digitale infrastructuur voor het bestuderen van geleerdencorrespondenties

Van 12-15 juni vond in Warschau het Tweede Congres van de COST-Action ‘Reassembling the Republic of Letters’ plaats. Deelnemers uit 31 Europese landen gaven presentaties over vorderingen in de agenda van dit netwerk. Doel is om binnen vier jaar concrete technische oplossingen te formuleren om de digitale infrastructuur zodanig te verbeteren dat verscheidene catalogi en databases met gegevens over vroegmoderne geleerdenbrieven probleemloos met elkaar kunnen communiceren. Ook wordt geëxperimenteerd met het leggen van verbindingen met prosopografische bronnen, met visualisaties van netwerken, en met automatische analyse van brieven en geleerde teksten.
